What happens when you realise your path is entrepreneurship rather than employment? Lindsay takes up the challenge and shares an account of her journey as it unfolds…
It’s December. We can’t help ourselves look back and review the year past.
Here are a few things I’ve noticed:
- If you can identify the question, no matter how obvious it seems, write it down. Have faith, an answer will come up.
- I wanted to firm up my ‘target’ market – find the people who would be most susceptible to the Mirror Mirror offer. Once I knew that was what I was looking for, ‘agile’ came up: companies transiting to agile would need help to align its people.
- Things take a while to evolve – even when you think things have landed, they may still keep subtly changing. Be patient!
- It took several months to find the association with ‘agile’ and I thought that was it. I wrote it into the 2018 business plan and tried to move on. But now I realise that while agile presents a good business case for Mirror Mirror, I should always have my eye on the target. Probably any company in a BIG change, like mergers and acquisition situations would also be good. I just need to keep reaching out and gathering information.
- There’s a fine line between passionate and boring. When you sell, don’t overdo it. Give people space to reach their own conclusions.
- I recently asked someone I’d met who could have used Mirror Mirror, but chose not to, for some feedback. “Don’t be too pushy” they said. “The first date is just getting to know each other”. I reflected on this and saw how I had behaved through their eyes – I had been over-talkative, over-salesy, under-interested in their needs, and I had pushed to agree next steps. I could kick myself – really? I’m doing this after all this time and practice? Good feedback.
- Don’t be too hard on yourself
- This is about learning. We’re not perfect. Things take time.
I don’t know why, but it struck me recently that we understand things at different levels. Imagine the 10-year old boy who is faced with the idea of ageing. He knows it will happen – but how much does he understand it?
