Six Habits Which Won’t Make Anybody Happy

by Marcel van Wiggen

On a regular basis I am meeting people who have become experts in feeling miserable, frustrated or even anxious. Whatever happens, their very first reaction is negative. This does not happen consciously or deliberately. They have, over time, unconsciously, trained themselves in becoming outstanding in negative thinking.

It does not matter who you are and how you perceive life, the destructive habits below will make you feel bad. So, make sure you are not picking up these habits! Continue reading

WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?

Debasish Mridha

We read and hear day in and day out the same bleak news on violence, wars, death, corruption, starvation and so on. I wonder if this is the only means that the media has to market it’s product and to gain that competitive edge? Perhaps this is the chicken or the egg question. Is it human nature that requires this type of sensationalism or have we been conditioned to react with huge interest to such?

Unleashing Unlikely Leaders

The vast majority of the world’s poor are women. They bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family, yet are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfil this responsibility. The Hunger Project firmly believes that these women are the key to ending world hunger. When given a voice, these women become powerful and important change-agents in raising their families and their villages out of poverty. Unlocking the creativity, leadership, entrepreneurialism and productivity of the poorest of the poor is what we do. We build leaders. We especially build women leaders.  Continue reading

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

picasso

There are two major factors which have an immense impact on career development. The first is related to the self and the second to the immediate boss.

Regarding the self; take your own self development into your own hands. So many potential people today just sit back and wait for training and development opportunities to somehow come their way. If only they would realise that everyday such opportunities are passing by without even being noticed.

Regarding the boss; one has to be lucky enough to have a real coach. A lot of interest is being put on coaching and mentoring in the recent years and it is high time. The difference on the development of a subordinate who is being managed versus coached is immense both in terms of the speed and the quality of development.

I Am Just Doing My Job!

by Anja Uitdehaag

If you are anything like me, you probably believe your work should speak for itself.

Women, more often than men, believe that hard work will be recognized and pay off and do not do enough to network with their organization and self-publicize their achievements. When a more senior position opens up, they assume they will be considered based on their accomplishments and credentials, despite having been reluctant to voice them.

However, just rolling up your sleeves and working long hours is no qualifier to go up the career ladder in the business world. Continue reading

CULTURAL DIVERSITY OR SIMILARITY?

Maya Angelou

When comparing different nationalities with respect to work ethics, behaviour, attitude, etc., one will always find some differences and at the same time some similarities. These cover complex areas since the real essence is related to traditions, culture, educational systems, history, societal values and norms and so on. However, one thing is clear and that is, when working with people of different nationalities / cultures, the more one concentrates on the similarities the more success is achieved in all aspects of the business. After all people are people (the world governed by the heart) but somehow different (the world governed by the mind).

Believe You Can Succeed And You Will

by Anja Uitdehaag

  • Can I really do this?
  • What if people don’t like what I have done?
  • What if I cannot create something new?
  • She is so smart, much better and more worthy than me;
  • I will never be successful – success is for others.

I seem to be pre-programmed to question myself.

When self-doubts creep in, I get highly sensitive and quick to take things personally. Or – when things have not gone as expected – I just do nothing and give in to the disappointment. Continue reading

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb”.  Nelson Mandela

The concept of Tribal Leadership

Let me just jump to it, what is Tribal Leadership? Well, perhaps it’s better to start with “what is a tribe?”. A tribe, as defined by Seth Godin in “Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us”, is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, connected to a leader and connected to an idea. Most of us are members in several tribes. I am a member of my family tribe as well as a member of various social tribes. I’m also a member of a basketball tribe, the metal head tribe and the gadget-loving tribe. I was also a member of different business tribes. With each tribe, I shared a common set of values and believes. Sometimes these common values and believes drove the tribe towards a collective goal that served as a bigger purpose for the tribe, and in some special cases it even served as a noble cause. These were the best tribes of my life, for the obvious reasons related to the ultimate pursuit of happiness, and when it comes to business, it brought innovation, efficiency, productivity and profitability. It’s like one of those great movies that win both, the reviews from critics and the box-office sales. Continue reading
